The Dancer

by Roni Elaine, 5 Feb 2011

Tutorial was written using both PSP X and PSP13.
Similar results can be obtained in earlier versions with just a few
Although my tutorials are my own creations, they are almost always
inspired by seeing so many beautiful creations in many groups.
Any similarities are truly the effects of viewing, using and enjoying the
tutorials written by many others.  This one was inspired by a preset
used in an old tutorial from 2005 by JMC Designs.
I encourage you to use other supplies and to experiment with
different settings to create something of your own.
    Skill Level - Intermediate

Change your foreground color to black.

    5.  In Layer Palette, click on the group layer (middle one)
Layers > Merge > Merge Down

In Layer Palette, set Blend Mode to Saturation
Note:  You can use your pick tool as I did
to resize that layer if you want.  It should be visible around
                 the main tube layer.
In Layer Palette, adjust Opacity to your preference.  I used 75%
You will now have something like this.
    6.    Note:  If you want a gold or silver frame you can use a pattern
you already have and skip using  my colorstrip.
           File > Open   colorstrip2_rec
Window > Duplicate  and close original
Effects > Edge Effects > Enhance   and minimize

If needed you can adjust it.
Layers > Convert to Raster Layer
Effects > Edge Effects > Enhance
Notes: Enhance not needed with some gold/silver patterns.
Also, with some color combinations you may need to change
the Blend Mode of the duplicated tube layer.  On the second
example at the top of tutorial, I had to change Blend Mode
                   to Overlay.  Play with it.
Edit > Copy  We're copying just the preset shape layer.
Make sure you're back on that layer.
Edit > Paste As New Image    and minimize

Use your Move Tool to move the dancer down

 10.   Activate the copy of the Preset image you made at Step 7.
          Image > Resize
The settings will depend upon what size you usually make your
header images.   Some people like them large and others like
them smaller.  I usually make mine 700-750 pxs in width and
500-550 in length.  For this one, I'll use the following settings:
             Width 750pxs, Height 550pxs,
                  Lock aspect ratio unchecked and
                        Resize all layers checked.
If you like smaller images, you will need to adjust settings and
continue adjusting size when we put it all together.
           Image > Mirror
Edit > Paste > Paste As New Layer
This should paste your finished dance image onto the new image.
If not, just Copy and Paste it.
Use your Move Tool to move it to the left side and resize it to your
liking.  I resized mine to fit more inside the framing and have more
of the preset showing on the right side.
I resized 90%.  Lock aspect ratio checked,
                          Resize all layers unchecked
                   (See example for placement)
           Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:  4, 4, 30, 4 black (or shadow of your choice)
  11.   File > Open   jk_ballet-shoes (pink)
          Edit > Copy and close
Edit > Paste As New Layer
Use your Move Tool to move the slippers to the right side and
           place to your liking.
Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow  (optional small shadow)
 12.   Change your foreground and background to contrasting colors
from your image.  I used #98c1ba and #fbd5df.
Set the foreground to a gradient - foreground/background
             Settings:  Linear, 231, 1
       Layers > New Raster Layer
Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom
Use Flood Fill Tool to left click and fill the layer with the gradient.
Effects > Texture Effects > Texture of your choice
I used Grain fine cloudy  with these settings
13.  Change your foreground to black or other dark color
Change your background to the minimized color strip pattern
you used before.  (Or the gold/silver pattern)
Layers > Merge > Merge Visible
          Image > Add Borders
             Settings:  1 px, black, symmetric
          Image > Add Borders
             Settings: 5 pxs, white, symmetric
Select the border with your Magic Wand.
Use Flood Fill Tool to right click to fill border with the pattern
Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel   Same settings
         Selections > Select None
Optional - Add a 1px border of black
Add your watermark in your usual way.
File > Export  > JPEG Optimizer   Suggested setting: 25
Included in the supplies are 2 different background images
you can use to make a background if making a letter.
Feel free to make whatever changes you'd like.
You can use them as is or use them to add border bars to them.
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
