Holiday Slats by RoniElaine - Nov. 15, 2010

The tutorial was written for Thanksgiving in the USA but it can easily
be adapted to any holiday or other special occasions such as a birthday.
Christmas  and Birthday examples for you here.
It was written using both PSP X and PSP13.
Similar results can be obtained in other versions with just a few
Although my tutorials are my own creations, they are almost always
inspired by seeing so many beautiful creations in many groups.
Any similarities are truly the effects of viewing, using and enjoying the
    tutorials written by many others.
I encourage you to use other supplies and to experiment with
different settings to create something of your own.
    Skill Level - Intermediate
No special filters are needed for this tutorial.
    Supplies:    HERE
This is a fairly easy tutorial and I hope that you will use
it to make something really original of your own using
                          your own supplies.
The following were made by GranGran
      and used with general permission:
I love her tubes and hope her health will improve so that we have
             more of them!

  3.    With your Magic Wand click on the black part of the image.
Use your Flood Fill Tool to left click and fill with your gradient.
Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur
             Setting: 15

      6.   Maximize the boy with the pumpkin or tube of your choice.
                     Select the merged layer.
Edit > Copy    You may close the tube now.
Edit > Paste As New Layer
             Image > Resize
Note: Resizing will depend upon tubes you choose.
The following are for the provided tubes.
Settings:  85%, Bicubic, Lock aspect ratio checked
                                       Resize all layers not checked
Repeat Image > Resize   Change setting to 90%
(We do this twice to preserve quality)
Use Move Tool to move down with shoe resting on wood layer.
            Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
                 Settings:  3, 3, 40, 5, black
                  Repeat with -3, -3 settings
     7.    Optional Step - You may want to add 1 or 2 "extras" from the tube with
the little Autumn images.  I am going to add an Acorn
                                         to mine.
Maximize the tube with the extras.  Select the Merged layer.
Use your Selection Tool to choose an item you'd like to add
and select that part of the image.
              Edit > Copy
Selections > Select None    Minimize to use later
Edit > Paste as New Layer onto your main image.
Resize as needed and place wherever you want to put it.
Add bevel and/or drop shadows of your choice.
I just used the same drop shadows.
Layers > Merge > Merge Visible
Congratulations!   You've finished your first image.
You may stop now and use this as a side border just adding
your own letter background to it.  Or use it as a tag.
If continuing on, minimize this image.
     8.     Now you need to go back and finish your second image.
Restore the second slats image that you had copied and mirrored.
You will be using the tube of the little girl for this part.  Or your own
                  second chosen image.
When you get to adding her, make sure she is facing to the left.
Repeat Steps   6 and 7.    Resize images as needed.
At Step 7 I used the leaf from the small decorative tube.
When you have this second image finished, move on to Step 9.
If you want to make name tags, make an extra copy of the one you
                   want to use.
    9.     File > New      800 x 600 pxs   Transparent
Edit > Copy  one of your images
Edit > Paste As New Layer  onto your transparent image.
Repeat  the Copy and Paste for the second image.
Arrange the two images depending on what you want to add.
Later you can add a Happy Thanksgiving text, decorative tubes,
                   a written message, etc.
            To each of your images
Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow      Change Opacity to 60.
   10.    Restore  leaf pattern_rec.  (You can colorize it to go with different tubes)
Image > Resize    Change setting to 800 x 600 pxs

             Selections > Select All
             Edit > Paste Into Selection
In Layers Palette, change Blend Mode to Soft Light and Opacity to 60

Note:  If you want to make a letter background, make a copy of this layer and
                               minimize it to use later.
   11.     Add Text of your choice.  I wrote Happy Thanksgiving
I used LeeBee Schwarz font.  I switched my color and gradient in Materials Palette.
Size of font: 48.   Arrange it where you want it and make any adjustments.
Convert to a Raster Layer and bring that layer to the top.
Add a bevel and drop shadow of your choice or the ones already set.
Layers > Merge > Merge All
This will let you see how that faded background will look.
You can Edit > Undo Merge All   if you want to make changes.
              Add the following borders:
1 pixel black, 1 pixel of your darker color, 1 pixel of black.

Effects > Texture Effects >  Rough Leather    Same settings
Note:  This effect has dramatic effects on colors.
You may use any other texture effect of your choice.
Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel  Same settings or your choice.
               Selections > Select None
Image > Add Borders        Setting: 1 px black

Add bevel and/or drop shadow of choice
                Layers > Duplicate
                Image > Mirror
Layers > Merge > Merge All
Add a layer and add your watermark.
Resize your image to your preference.  I resized to 700 x 537.
Export using JPEG Optimizer.  Suggested setting:  20 or 25.
      14.    Optional for a letter background
In Materials Palette set the copy of the faded background you made at Step 10
                   as your Pattern.
File > New    Settings:  1750 or width you usually use x 400 height.
Use Flood Fill tool to fill with the pattern.
Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

Note:  You can do Layers > Merge All to see how it will look.
You may add a layer of one of your colors  and adjust opacity if you want a
softer background.   Add any decorative items you want on the side
and add optional bevels and/or drop shadows
                      Then merge your layers.
