Tutorial written on September 24th, 2009

Skill Level - Intermediate
  This tutorial was written using PSP X but should work
   in other versions with just a few adjustments.
   It was written in "split screen" format so that
   you can work on the tutorial with PSP open on one
   side of your screen and the tutorial on the other side.
Supplies Needed

    Filters Needed:

       FM Tile Tools - Blend Emboss  

         Fantastic Machines - Paint Engine 

          Both filters HERE  

    Supplies:  Click HERE

       All supplies needed will be provided for you.
         I encourage you to use tubes and backgrounds of your choice

       and make this your own "original" creation.

         Engrossing Script (font)



1.  File > Open > Side bar_Roni

     Window > Duplicate and close original


     In Materials Palette, set two colors from the image

     I used #d2c1af for the foreground and

        #715c4b for the background


    Image > Resize


     Width 100, Height 500


     Lock Aspect Radius - Unchecked

     Resize All Layers checked


2.  Image > Canvas Size


     Width - 200, Height 500

     Left Center Arrow checked

        (Right will be at 100)


     Layers > Duplicate

     Image > Mirror

     Layers > Merge > Merge Visible


     Image > Resize


     150 Width, Height 500

        Note: At this point if there are any color transitions

                    you want to "soften", use your Push Brush

                    or Clone Brush.  On one sample I used my

                    Push Brush set at size 6 to blend some

                    color in the lower part of the bar at about the

                    375 height


3.  Image > Canvas Size


      700 width, 500 height

      Left center arrow checked


     Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow


      Vertical 0, Horizontal 5, Opacity 50, Blur 4, Color Black


4.  File > Open   open NA.pspimage (the maiden tube)

     Image > Mirror

     Edit > Copy  - you may close this tube now


     Edit > Paste As New Layer

     Use your Move Tool to move to the left so that the

        pueblo is on the left margin (see example)


5.  Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel


      Bevel #2, Width 8, Smoothness 0, Depth 1,

        Ambience and Shininess - 0

        Angle 315, Intensity 50, Elevation 30, Color - White


     Edit > Repeat Inner Bevel


     Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow


      3, 3, 50, 3 Black 


     Repeat Drop Shadow with -3


6.   File > Open  

      native_american_ed_morgan_ buffalo_blessing_small



      Edit > Copy   You may close this tube now

      Edit > Paste As New Layer

      Layers > Arrange > Move Down

         Note:  This step is optional.  You may prefer having

                       this tube as the top layer.


      Image > Resize


          85%, Resize all layers unchecked

      Edit > Repeat Resize at 85% twice


      Use your Move Tool to move the tube

        to the far right and down (See example for placement)


     Effects > Plugins > FM Tile Tools > Blend Enboss

        Setting: Default



7.  Layers > New Raster Layer

     Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom


     In Materials Pallete, set up a gradient for foreground



      Style: Rectangular

         Angle: 134, Repeats 0

         Invert: Checked

         All settings at 50





    Use your Flood Fill tool to fill this layer with gradient


    Effects > PlugIns > Fantastic Machines > Paint Engine

    Settings: Default


     Click on Wrap Edges and then on Randomize

       Note: You can keep clicking on Randomize to get other

                   settings.  I used the first one.



    Effects > Texture Effects > Weave

    Settings:  47, 2, 50, your light color, Fill gaps unchecked


     Note: When using different colors, you may need to

           adjust this step.

     Optional: Effects > Edge Effects > Enhance


8.  In Layers Palette, click on the Merged Layer (the sidebar)


     Layers > Duplicate

     Image > Mirror


     In Layers Palette, set Blend Mode on Soft Light

       and Opacity on 85% or to your liking

     Use your Move Tool to move a little to the right (see example)


9.  File > Open  Pottery_NA_patao

     Image > Resize

      Setting: 50%

     Edit > Copy    You may close this tube now

     Edit > Paste as a New Layer

     Layers > Arrange > Move Up


     Use your Move Tool to move next to the other pot

     In Layers Pallette, set Blend Mode to Difference or       



10. Optional: Depending on how much text or Word Art you wish

         to add:

         File > Open    pueblo tube

         Edit > Copy   You may close this tube now

         Edit > Paste as a New Layer

         Use your Move Tool to move up and to the right

         ( In Layers Palette, you can move this layer below the

            Maiden layer)

         Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

             Settings:  3, -3, 50, 3, Black



11. Optional:  Add Text or Word Art of your choice.

       I used Engrossing Script font  at Size 72 and reversed my

       solid colors in the Materials pallette.


       Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel

       Settings:  Bevel #2, Width 22

          Image: 17, 3, -30, 28

          Light: White, 0, 63, 34


       Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

         Settings: 2, 2, 50, 3, black


12.  **Note:  If you are going to make a letter background, click on

                  your bottom layer in the Layers Pallette.

                  Edit > Copy

                  Edit > Paste as New Image and minimize


                  Repeat this step, choosing the merged bar layer


13.  Layers > Merge > Merge All

        Image > Add Borders

          Settings: 2 pxs of your dark color


        Selections > Select All

        Selections > Modify > Contract

           Setting: 2 pxs


         Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout

            Settings: 2, 2, 100, 15, Black

         Selections > Select None


         Image > Add Borders

          Settings:  20 pxs of White

         In Materials palette, switch back to gradient


         Use your Magic Wand to select the border.

         Flood Fill with gradient


         Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel


             Bevel #11, Width 12

             Image: 16, 4, 0, 0

             Light: White, 315, 50, 30


        Selections > Select None

         Image > Add Borders

           Setting: 1 px of your dark color


If just using this as a tag, you are finished.

Add a layer for your watermark, resize to your liking

and Export through JPEG Optimizer at 25%


If making a letter background, continue with next steps.


1.  Activate the merged bar image that you copied at

      Step 12.


      Image > Resize

       Settings: 75 Width, 300 Height,  Pixels, Bicubic

            Lock aspect ratio not checked

            Resize all layers checked


      Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

        Settings: Edge, Vertical


 2.  Image > Canvas Size

       Settings:  Width (your choice)  I used 1600

                              Height: 300

                              Left center arrow checked

        Layers >  New Raster Layer

       Selections > Select All


3.  Activate the background image you copied at Step 12.

     Edit > Copy and close

     Edit > Paste Into Selection

     Layers > Arrange > Move Down

     Selections > Select None


      Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

         Settings: Edge, Vertical


      Layers > New Raster Layer

        Use your Flood Fill Tool to fill layer with your light color

        In Layers Pallette, adjust opacity to your liking

           I used 44%


4.  Click on your top layer (the sidebar)

      Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

        Settings: 0, 3, 50, 10, Black,

                          Shadow on new layer checked


      Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

         Same settings


      Optimize through JPEG Optimizer at 25%
