Tutorial by RoniElaine - 10/09/08

Skill Level - Intermediate

This tutorial was written using PSP X but should work
in other versions with just a few adjustments.
The tutorial was written in "split screen" format so that
you can work on the tutorial with PSP open on one
side of your screen and the tutorial on the other side.
Environmentally friendly; no need to print.

Supplies Needed

      Filters

Alien Skin Eye Candy 5: Texture   HERE
Note:  If you have Eye Candy 4000 - Swirl
I prefer using that filter.  Notes include
                   instructions for both

       Supplies  HERE

All supplies needed will be provided for you.
I encourage you to use supplies of your choice
and make this your own "original" creation.

        Oswald Achenbach art
msk1_swrls+ties_KEMc  - put in your Mask folder
        CenturyPlant_01_Patao
        CoilMat_Patao
        GG08~Horse_004
        horses3_sheila  (shared tube)
(Note:  Many thanks to Kirsten who made the mask
specifically for this tutorial and to Patao and GranGran
for the use of their tubes)
Notes

All settings will remain the same
   unless new settings are given.
PSP Tool Settings are the defaults
   unless different settings are given.

Making the Header

1.  Open graphic and tubes.
Shift+D  (to duplicate all) and close originals.
Make sure your mask is in your mask folder.
     Choose foreground and background colors.
I used 873f1f and d4bfad for this graphic.

2.  Activate Oswald Achenbach Art
     Image > Resize
     Settings:
     85%, Bicubic
Resize all layers and Lock aspect ratio checked
Note: A guide if using a different graphic, my graphic
was 722 x 490 before resizing.  Does not need
to be that size, just quite a bit wider than tall.
In Layer palette - Promote Background Layer

3.   Layers > New Raster Layer
Use Flood Fill Tool to fill with foreground (darker) color
Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

4.   In layer palette, activate your graphic layer.
Layers > Load/Save Mask > Load Mask From Disk
      Settings:
      msk1_swrls+ties_(KEMc)
      Source luminance
      Fit to layer
      Invert transparency checked
      Hide all mask..........Load
Layers > Merge > Merge Group

5.  Effects > 3 D Effects > Inner Bevel

6.  In Layer Palette, activate your background color layer
Effects > Texture Effects > Texture
Click on the Default arrow up at the top
Then for Texture, scroll down and choose Blue spruce

Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

7.  Now we get to play with adding tubes.  I'm using a
cactus and several horses as my Indian brave is out
looking for horses.  Other ideas are wolves, coyotes,
eagles, the wild cats of the Southwest, or more people

       For the cactus:
       Activate CenturyPlant_01_patao
       Image > Resize
       I resized twice;  50%, then 75%

       Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen
       Edit > Copy
Edit > Paste as New Layer   onto your main image
Use Move Tool to move to left (see example)
         Resize again if needed
         Optional:
In Layer Palette, I changed opacity to 70%

8.  For the light colored horses
       Activate GG08~Horse_004
       Image > Mirror
       Image > Resize
       I resized 3 times - 50%, 50% and 85%
Note:  resizing will depend on where you put them

       Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen
       Edit > Copy
Edit > Paste as New Layer  onto main graphic
Use Move Tool to move into place

Activate the same tube again to colorize and add
more horses.  I used 2 more of these horses

Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colorize
       Settings:
       Hue  18    Saturation 160
(or use your favorite color or colorizing method)

       Edit > Copy
Edit > Paste as New Layer  (for each horse you add)
Use Move Tool to move into place where you want
In Layer Palette, arrange your horse layers up and
       down as needed

9.    For the dark horse
       Activate horses3_sheila
       Image > Mirror
       Image > Resize
       I resized 3 times - 50%, 50% and 85%

       Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen
       Edit > Copy
Edit > Paste as New Layer  onto main graphic
Use Move Tool to move into place

Note: Before merging, you can add bevels or drop
shadows to your tubes if wanted
Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

10.  Image > Add Borders
Add a 1 pixel symmetric border of Black
       Image > Add Borders
Add a 3 pixel symmetric border of White

In Material palette set background to gradient
       Settings:
Style: Radial, Angle 90, Repeats 5
Center Point: H and V both at 50
       Invert checked

Using your Magic Wand tool, select the white border
       Flood fill with your gradient
       Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
       Settings:
       Bevel #4
       4, 4, 2, 0, 0, White, 315, 50, 30
(or a bevel of your choice)
       Selections > Select None
       Image > Add Borders
       Add 1 pixel of Black

11.  In layer palette, Promote Background Layer
       Image > Canvas Size
       Settings:
Width: 800   Height: 500  Left Center Arrow
Use your Move Tool to move image to the right
leaving a narrow area on the left and a wide area
       on the right
       (See example for placement)

12.  Layers > New Raster Layer
Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom
Use Flood Fill Tool to fill bottom layer with gradient

13.  Note:  For my example I used Eye Candy 4000-Swirl
Default setting.  Then Edge Effects - Enhance Edges
The 4000 filter is no longer easily available.
So here is an alternative using a filter we do have.
Any swirly background effect will work well.

Effects > PlugIns > Alien Skin Eye Candy 5 > Swirl
       Settings:
Scroll down and choose Small Spirals

Effects > Plugins > Alien Skin Eye Candy 5 > Swirl
       Settings:
Scroll down again and choose Tiny Spirals

Effects > Edge Effects > Enhance More

14.  Activate your top layer.....your main graphic
Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel (last used)
Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow (last used)
       Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
       Settings:
       -6, -13, 50, 30  Black

15.  Activate CoilMat_Patao   tube
       Image > Resize
       Settings:
       Pixels, Bicubic
Width: 100    Height will self adjust
(Note: or any decorative tube of your choice)

Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen (if needed)
       Edit > Copy
Edit > Paste as New Layer   onto your graphic
Use your Move Tool to move it to the upper right side

       Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
       Settings:
       Bevel #2
       8, 0, 1, 0, 0, White, 315, 50, 30
       Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
       Settings:
       3, 3, 50, 30  Black
       Layers > Duplicate
Use your Move Tool to move this below the first one

16.  Layers > Merge Visible

17.  Image > Add Borders
       Settings:
Add a 1 pixel border of black

       Image > Add Borders
       Settings:
Add a 12 pixel border of white
Select this border with your Magic Wand
Use your Flood Fill tool to fill the border with gradient

18.  Effects > Texture Effects > Blinds
       Settings:
       5, 50, your dark color
Horizontal and Light from Left/Top checked

       Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
       Settings:
       Bevel #4
       4, 4, 2, 0, 0, White, 315, 50, 31
(or a bevel of your choice)

      Image > Add borders
      Settings:
Add a 1 pixel border of Black

At this time you can add your watermark and resize it
to a size you prefer.  Then Export as a jpeg

If using as a Header for a letter, create a background
to go with it.
